R.E.M. are long time friends of ours. We have worked closely with them since 1999 on each of their last four websites. Their needs have evolved tremendously over that time period. Whether they needed to make the website easier for their staff to manage in order to keep up with the feverish pace of the news that the band was creating when they were touring, or they needed a complete redesign of the website to match the look and feel of an upcoming release or tour, we have been there for them to design and develop the best solution possible.
This most recent website was launched in October 2015 and it allowed us to make some pretty huge improvements for the band including, responsiveness, migration to WordPress for much more efficient management of news and announcements, and the new life that comes with a fresh new website design. It needed it badly after its predecessor, which was online for seven years! We collaborated with good friend Chris Bilheimer, who is R.E.M.’s art director, on the design and followed his lead when it came to creating the layouts for all of the pages and responsive views. Because R.E.M. is now retired, there was really no need for a touring section. They are, however still very active, so we decided to focus strongly in the ease of posting news articles. Outside of that, it was decided to treat this new website as more of a very accessible archive of the band’s incredible career and keep it flexible enough that if there was ever to be some sort of reunion, the site could adapt to handle the onslaught of traffic and news that would be generated by this news.
Since its launch, the website continues to be updated weekly with news related to the band and the many projects the members are involved in. We are still working with them and look forward to more fun projects in the future.
